Confederate Memorial Plaza

We are raising funds to build a Confederate Memorial Plaza near Quitman, Arkansas, the home of Col. Allen R. Witt and many of the members of the 10th Arkansas Infantry/Cavalry.

Col. Witt was a colorful figure who bravely led his men into battle at Shiloh and Port Hudson, on daring raids into Kansas and Missouri, and protected local Arkansawyers from marauding bands of Unionist bushwackers. One one occasion, he was captured and en route to Fort Delaware, he helped to organize the commandeering of the prisoner transport ship “Maple Leaf,” and escaped off the coast of North Carolina. He returned home to Arkansas by late 1863 and organized the 10th Arkansas Cavalry.

The memorial plaza will honor him and all Arkansawyers who fought against the Yankee invader.
